Development Manager – Major Gifts and Membership

Under the direction of the Director of Development, the Development Manager is responsible for designing, implementing, and executing a program to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors in the $10,000 - $100,000 gift range. Also manages the Membership related effort and programs of the Foundation.

The Development Manager is a key member of the administrative team and, as such, may be called upon to take on additional responsibilities to achieve success in all fundraising efforts.


·         Manage a portfolio of Major Gift prospects to ensure that timely steps are taken toward cultivation, solicitation and closure.  Major Gift prospects may be individuals, foundations or corporations.

o   Manage individual prospects by coordinating identification, qualification, solicitation and stewardship with the Director of Development and the Executive Director.

o   Manage foundation and corporate prospects. Work with the grant writer to research likely prospects, draft grant proposals, collaborate on compliance and maintain stewardship relationships.

o   Manage all CEF Membership programs such as Circle of Champions, Legacy Society, etc.

·         Build professional relationships with Development Committee members as well as with the Department of Catholic Schools, Department of Media Relations and other departments of the Archdiocese as required to inform and/or promote major gifts.

·         Manage cultivation and stewardship events for prospects and Major Gift and Membership donors.  Stage regional events as needed throughout the tri-county archdiocese.

·         Work with Communication Coordinator on all promotional and collateral materials and outreach

·         Supervise Stewardship Coordinator.

·         Prepare goals, timelines, and projected results as well as maintain annual data on Major Gift growth.

·         Working with the Development Manager – Data Analysis and Research, document all prospect and donor activity in Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge.



Education and Experience 

·         Bachelor’s degree;

·         At least 5 years of experience with increasing responsibility for fundraising and related areas in a not-for-profit organization;

·         Demonstrated experience closing gifts with individuals, foundations and/or corporations at the $10,000 level and above.

·         Knowledge of California foundations and corporations preferred.

·         Knowledge of and working experience with the tri-county Los Angeles Archdiocese area Catholic donor community preferred.

·         Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with peers.

·         Experience working with Trustees and volunteers is helpful.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


·         Team Player:  Ability to maintain effective working relationships, show compassion and dedication; collaborate with peers for productivity and personal growth, sense of humor.

·         Ability to ask for gifts and close fundraising transactions.

·         Creative, marketing-oriented strategic and tactical thinking skills.

·         Strong communication skills, both oral and written, grant writing experience is preferred.

·         Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office, navigating the Internet, and experience with relational databases, specifically Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge.

·         Fundamental knowledge of budgeting, understanding financial statements, and generating financial reports.                                                       

·         Understanding of the Archdiocesan Catholic Schools and the needs of the students served by CEF is preferred.

·         Ability to maintain confidentiality and make appropriate judgments about sharing information with those who have a need to know.

·         Ability to work independently with initiative and accuracy.                                                                                

·         Must have ability to:

o   Drive throughout the 3-county areas of the Archdiocese of LA

o   Occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.

o   Operate standard office equipment, digital camera and computer terminal

o   Sit for sustained periods of time on a daily basis.

o   Perform task requiring intermittent bending, stooping and walking.

o   Sustain frequent movement of the fingers, wrists, hands and arms.
