Coordinator Of Elementary Catechesis

​POSITION SUMMARY: The Coordinator of Elementary Catechesis (Spanish/English) is responsible to promote effective faith formation and education in the Archdiocese focusing primarily on grades one through six.  This encompasses effective consulting, organizing and providing leadership training and formation including curriculum development and text evaluations.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

All Archdiocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church and they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work.

1. Engages in, and supports a collaborative culture within and beyond the office and is responsible for the procedures implemented in the ORE.

2. Represents the Archdiocese and participates in national, regional and local organizations and events to further the goals and mission of the office.

3. Stays current with leading catechetical trends and development as it pertains to the ministry and is knowledgeable in guiding Church documents.

4. Prepares annually and is accountable for a division budget and a yearly ministry plan.  At times handles financial transactions.

5. Collaborates in the efforts of ORE in implementing events on a diocesan and regional scale (e.g. RECongress, regional congresses, commissioning, etc.).

6. Promotes a positive working relationship with his/her administrative secretary as assigned.  Supervises his/her administrative secretary in relationship to assigned tasks.  Shares responsibility for general supervision and appraisal.

7. Performs related duties as required.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Develops a vision for elementary catechesis in English/Spanish through assessment and evaluation and in consultation with the Archdiocesan Elementary Commission and Parish Catechetical Leaders (e.g. Directors/Coordinators of Religious Education, catechists, etc.).

2. Sets long and short range goals and objectives for Elementary formation in the Archdiocese. 

3. Directs and provides consultation, leadership training and formation for catechetical leaders with a special emphasis on family education/formation.  This also includes programs of intergenerational catechesis (e.g. whole family catechesis) and homeschooling.  

4. Coordinates and provides resources and seasonal in-services for Parish Catechetical Leaders.

5. In collaboration with the Office for Worship provides consultation for children sacramental preparation, i.e. First Penance and First Eucharist, and works with the Archdiocesan Initiation Team in supporting and implementation of RCIA for catechetical age children. 

6. Develops and sustains the Elementary Advisory Board.

7. Responsible for evaluating grade level textbooks considering the needs of the Archdiocese. 

8. In collaboration with Coordinators of Catechist Formation, is responsible for the ongoing and further development of the specialization phase of the catechist certification process for those ministering to elementary age children.

9. Performs related duties as required.


Requirements:

​MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities, typically:

1. Active member of a Roman Catholic faith community.

2. Basic and Advanced Catechist Formation Certificate.

3. Master’s degree in Religious Studies or similar field.

4. 3-5 years diocesan or 5-7 years of parish religious education leadership

5. Program development experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Recognized organizational and inter-personal skills are required.  He/She should have an ability to work within parish and diocesan systems.


Knowledge of:

1. Program planning, development, and organization.

2. Resource and budget management.

3. Public speaking, group facilitation and teaching methodology.

4. Professional use of social media and technology.

5. The multi-cultural nature of ministry in the Archdiocese.


Skill in:

1. Pastoral application of Church teaching.

2. Communicate effectively in written and oral form.

3. Fluent in English and Spanish preferred. 

4. Use of current office software including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and databases.


Ability to:

1. Exercise personal initiative while collaborating with a team.

2. Utilize a collaborative leadership style to facilitate the development of leadership.

3. Occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.

4. Sit for sustained periods of time on a daily basis.

5. Perform tasks requiring intermittent bending, stooping, and walking.

6. Sustain frequent movement of the fingers, wrists, hands, and arms.

7. Thrive in a group setting with varied personalities and priorities; must be able to switch directions mid-stream if necessary.
