The Editor of Angelus News supports Archbishop José H. Gomez in the new evangelization of the nation’s largest and most diverse Catholic community, which serves more than 5 million Catholics and conducts ministries in more than 40 languages.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Communications, the Editor oversees all editorial aspects of a multimedia platform that includes a weekly four-color newsmagazine, daily e-newsletter, website and various social media channels.

The Editor maintains Angelus’ commitment to presenting a worldview rooted in authentic Catholic social and moral teaching — through long-form storytelling, photojournalism, reporting, analysis, and ommentary.

The ideal candidate will have in-depth experience in writing and editing and a passionate desire to engage events in the Church and the world and directions in culture and be able to understand and interpret these things from the standpoint of an authentic Catholic teaching and sensibility.




·         Serves on Senior Communications Team with the Chief Digital and Marketing Officer, Chief Communications Manager, and Director of Government and Community Relations and provides strategic advice and guidance to Vice Chancellor for Communication Communications.

 ·         Serves as member of Tidings Corporation Board.

 ·         Works closely with the Angelus Editorial Board to determine content for each weekly edition of Angelus— this includes news and feature coverage of Los Angeles and California politics and life; coverage of all aspects of the life of the local Church; coverage of national and international news, issues and trends; cultural coverage (movies, books, the arts, sports; “ideas” and opinion-journalism); and content related to spiritual formation, Catholic culture and Catholic living. 

·         Directly supervises a team that includes the Associate Editor, Features Editor, Production Coordinator, Photo Editor and outside contractors responsible for social media, daily digital newsletter, Always Forward, a weekly digital edition, and the daily updates to Supervisory duties include interviewing applicants for employment, conducting performance appraisals and recommending salary increases; ensuring employees have opportunity for ongoing development of professional skills and spiritual growth.  

 ·         Assigns articles and stories and works with writers and photographers to shape the content and visual “look” of the print publication and website.

 ·         For each weekly edition, oversees issue layout and placement of stories, with Associate Editor and Production Coordinator. With Production Coordinator, ensures compelling contemporary layout and design. For each weekly edition, oversees all photo selection, working with Photo Editor and Associate Editor.

 ·         Establishes and maintains relationships with a team of local and national reporters, photographers and columnists.

 ·         Identifies and develops new talent to serve as writers and photographers across Angelus News plaforms.

 ·         Under direction of Vice Chancellor for Communications and in collaboration with Chief Communications Officer, contributes to regular Angelus News podcast and radio program.

 ·         Provides leadership and strategic direction for development and implementation of plans for future growth of the multimedia platform and magazine. 



Education and Experience


Any combination of education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, typically:


·         Active member of a Roman Catholic faith community.

·         Master’s degree in journalism, management or related field, preferred.

·         10 years of working experience in a related position, preferably with a newspaper or magazine, preferred.

·         Must be computer literate and have a working knowledge of hardware and software applications related to the publishing industry.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


Knowledge of:


·         In-depth experience in reporting, editing, photography and newspaper page design.

·         Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, InCopy and InDesign.

·         Thorough working knowledge of the Roman Catholic Church (including its teachings and doctrine) and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to provide accurate information to the public.


Skills in:


·         Deep and passionate engagement with events in the Church and the world and directions in culture and the capacity to understand and interpret these from the standpoint of an authentic Catholic teaching and sensibility.

·         Excellent management skills and ability to provide strategic direction for development and implementation of plans for future growth of the multimedia platform and magazine.


Ability to:


  • Occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.


  • Sit for sustained periods of time on a daily basis.


  • Perform tasks requiring intermittent bending, stooping, and walking.


  • Sustain frequent movement of the fingers, wrists, hands, and arms.
