Youth Minister

The goal of creating and sustaining a youth ministry is based on the expectation set by the USCCB, in which a youth ministry empowers young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today, draws young people to responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the Catholic faith community, and fosters the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person. 


General Description

The youth minister will lead a program that will address the three goals set forth by the USCCB in Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry.  The youth minister is responsible for developing a program that invites high school youth from the entire St. Mary Community, to grow in their faith through prayer and catechesis, and to offer themselves in service to the community.  The youth minister is also expected to develop communication with adults in the parish community, especially the family of youth, who can collaborate in building the program and the services we will offer to our young people.


  • Develops a program that meets the needs of our St. Mary youth, and reaches out to teens especially on the margins of our faith community
  • Is available to our teens at set times for listening, advising and referral
  • Develops a consistent weekly gathering of youth that will be the core of the youth ministry’s effort to foster growth in discipleship of Jesus
  • Does the recruiting and invitation work necessary within our St Mary community to build the attendance at that group
  • Works in collaboration with our Religious Education Department, especially our confirmation coordinator.
  • Creates and develops a team which would/could include teens, young adults and adults that would assist in the efforts of the program, and sees to their enrichment in leadership skills, as well as their catechetical and spiritual growth
  • Organizes planning meetings of leaders
  • Recruits, trains, oversees and evaluates leaders within the youth ministry
  • Defines responsibilities of all youth ministry leaders
  • Is responsible to see that all leaders in the youth ministry have submitted to parish and Archdiocesan requirements on being fingerprinted and being up-to-date in their Virtus Training.
  • Creates, organizes and executes a retreat for youth ministry leaders once per year
  • Creates, organizes and executes retreats and events for the youth
  • Creates, organizes and executes field trips or social/communal events for youth
  • Is responsible for the publication and announcement of youth ministry activities and events, and communicating the work of the youth ministry to the parish community
  • Offers, encourages and organizes the participation of our youth in outside retreat opportunities (i.e. City of Saints, SAW, Inspiration, Congress Youth Day, Steubenville)
  • Collaborates with our Religious Education Department in supporting and organizing our A.V. Youth Day
  • Makes efforts to gain the endorsement, support and involvement of parish adults, especially parents and parish organizations
  • Is responsible to collaborate with clergy on evaluating the needs, interests, gifts and attitudes of youth and young adults
  • Coordinates fundraising efforts as needed to support youth ministry programs, and oversees budget of available funds
  • Budget and youth ministry funds will be entirely handled by parish business manager.  All needs and request are submitted to her/him.
  • Participates in parish governing structures to ensure visibility and collaboration of youth ministry with all parish programs and groups
  • Abides by parish expectations for requests for facilities
  • Develops goals and means of developing youth ministry program, in collaboration with clergy and youth ministry leaders
  • Coordinates opportunities of service and outreach for our youth at least semi-annually
  • Builds a presence with teens in our parish grade school and our Religious Education program
  • Attends all staff meetings
  • Attends parish council meetings



  • Is an active and enthusiastic Roman Catholic
  • Lives a lifestyle that would be an example to young people and that is consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.  As an employee of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, would be expected to conduct him/herself according to the goals and mission of the Church while performing work.
  • Working knowledge of Renewing the Vision
  • A certificate in Basic Catechist Formation from a diocese
  • A certificate in Youth Ministry Specialization from a diocese
  • Submits to a confidential background investigation through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles
  • Has completed the Virtus Protecting God’s Children Program for Adults
  • Be able to lift a 20 lb package
