Diet Aide

St. John of God Retirement Care Center - Los Angeles

Under the general direction of the Food Service Director, assumes responsibility for opening the department for service.  Wash, dry and prepare plates and silverware (organize) for food service.  Deliver and pick up carts and dirty dishes as required from the work floor.  May be asked to clean trash cans, carts, floor, counters, and other janitorial duties.  On occasion, may assigns and checks work of all plates and food prep areas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Wash all dishes in a fast, safe and organized manner.
  •  Help out in other areas when tasks are completed, or as needed (aside from breaks or time off).                                                                      
  • Take responsibility for ensuring all work within your scope is done promptly, efficiently, and to a high quality.                                                     
  • Take carts to floor, deliver food, pick up food/carts, clean carts, clean kitchen, organize kitchen, sweep/mop and ensure safety at all times.        
  • Assigns and checks work of all plates and food prep areas as assigned.                                                                                                       
  • Opens kitchen for business with morning chef and turns on equipment as needed, drink prep, service of breakfast and lunch, dessert prep, salad bar prep as needed.                                                      
  •  Oversees the set up of all stations on the food line as required.               
  •  Assumes dish-room and tray line responsibilities as required; performs all duties of diet aide as needed.                                               
  • Checks refrigerators/freezers for cleanliness and appropriate par stock levels, labels, temperature readings are properly logged etc.      
  • Receives early food deliveries (bread, bakery, rolls, ice cream, etc.) as required.                                                                                            
  • Extensive dishwashing, janitorial, serving, hosting and bussing required.                                                                                                   
  • Excellent attendance required                                                                  
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with all co-workers.                    
  • Ensure service is provided at a high quality at all levels to which you can and should assist.                                                                                   
  • Lift dish racks of up to 50lbs in a wet environment.  Ensure safety precautions as possible.                                                                                 
  • Other duties as needed



Position Qualifications:

  • Must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and understand English to follow menu specifications and check in orders, to follow safety rules, company/departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. 
  • Ability to follow safety precautions when handling sharp knives, slicing, and institutional equipment to prevent injuries.
  • Knowledge of safe food handling.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills to instruct others.
  • Needs to appear neat and pleasant all the time.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk or hear, and taste or smell.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
