Parish Director

The Pastor is the authoritative representative, the chief administrator, and legal representative of the parish (Canon 532). In this capacity, the many needs of the faith community are often greater than one person is able to serve. As the authoritative representative of the parish, the Pastor may employ a Parish Director to assist him in fulfilling his responsibility for the leadership and management of the parish and parish related organizations. The Parish Director supports the Pastor by assisting him with the implementation and maintenance of policies and procedures required by the Diocese and civil law, and for the effective operation of the parish. The Parish Director provides leadership, management, and resource development in pastoral, temporalities and administration. 


I. Lay Personnel:

a. Staff: Directs and oversees all work assignments, based on directives and goals of the Pastor.

  • Holds lay personnel accountable for work assignments.
  • Provides direction and guidance for lay personnel.
  • Participates in recruiting, hiring, and termination process in collaboration with the Pastor.
  • Establishes and monitors Performance Evaluations for lay personnel, providing ongoing verbal and written feedback as related to the work performance of each lay person reporting to the Director.
  • Assists in coordination of salaries, merit increases, and benefits programs for lay personnel.
  • Establishes, adheres to, and facilitates communication mechanisms with and for lay personnel.
  • Assures that lay staff adheres to the Diocesan Safe Environment requirements
  • Schedule and record minutes for staff meetings

 b.      Volunteer Resources

  • Supports parish ministries through staff liaisons
  • Ensures good communications between and among ministries
  • Supports parish staff and leaders in recruiting ministry leaders and members of new ministries

 II. Financial:

a.       Parish Director may delegate to Parish Controller or outside CPA/consultant the following:

  • Assists in preparation of financial plans, reports and presentations, including the Annual Parish Financial and Ministry Report
  • Assists Finance Council in preparing, reviewing and administering budgets
  • Assists in coordination with Diocesan Finance Office
  • Assists in coordination with Finance Council
  • Assists in maximizing cash management resources
  • Reconcile cash drawer and prepare deposit of weekly receipts
  • Oversees outside financial consultants (e.g. CPA)

 III.  Development:

  • Assists Stewardship & Pastoral Services Appeal Committee with campaigns and programs
  • Facilitates parish fund raising, planned giving and endowment programs
  • Coordinates parish community awareness and public relations activities
  • Participates in planning for future parish facilities expansion
  • Parish contact person for all parish fundraising activities including Fiesta de Solano, Harvest Dinner, etc.

IV.   Property Management and Maintenance:

  • Oversees all aspects of parish facilities (Church, Rectory & Food Bank), including coordinating maintenance and repair actions with staff and volunteers
  • Supervise custodial staff, kitchen coordinator and A/V coordinator
  • Coordinate and schedule parish facilities; manage parish calendar
  • Ensures that an annual Reserve Analysis is completed
  • Solicits and reviews bids and quotations; negotiates contracts
  • Manage for all service providers
  • Provide technical support for IT and phone systems
  • Establishes and monitors preventative maintenance programs for all properties
  • Maintains security of property: alarm systems, key files, event security, etc.
  • Ensures Diocesan policies regarding temporalities are followed
  • Parish liaison for Santa Margarita Catholic High School
  • Oversees risk management and insurance
  • Oversees Worker’s Compensation
  • Oversees safety and accident reporting

V.  Administrative:

  • Directs overall management of the Parish Office
  • Consults with and advises the Pastor on business and administrative matters that affects the parish.
  • Coordinates and communicates with Diocese of Orange offices
  • Attends Parish Finance Council meetings
  • Ensures all required parish records are properly maintained and safeguarded
  • Maintains good working relationships and effective communications between parish community, various organizations, neighbors, and outside authorities.Attends 
  • Diocesan meetings, as necessary, representing the parish and the Pastor
  • Oversees Sacramental recording





  • B.S. or B.A. from a four-year college or university


  • Ten years Management experience, with Business or Finance background, strongly preferred
  • Previous Pastoral Management Preferred

Skills / Knowledge:

  • (Practicing) Roman Catholic
  • High proficiency with technical computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Flexible
  • Professional in appearance and demeanor
