Diaconate Formation

Reporting to the Director of Diaconate Formation, the Formation Coordinator develops, implements, facilitates, and coordinates significant dimensions of the human, academic, pastoral, and spiritual components of the diaconate formation program


Because all Archdiocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work. 

Publicity & branding:

  •  Provide diaconate formation input to various publications
  • Website and social media management
  • Develop & support presentations required by the staff for presentation to various individuals, parishes and groups
  • Plan and execute informational/recruitment exhibit for diaconate formation at Congress & regional Congress
  • Maintain and distribute Diaconate Formation publications
  • Update ACC News, parish bulletin notes, and other communication opportunities


  • Describe and summarize the target diaconal candidate based on criteria from   National Directory defining the background, education, and experience required for a diaconal candidate
  • Coordinate Diaconate Formation Information Days in Each Pastoral Region
  • Develop and update PowerPoint Presentations for Diaconal Formation publicity
  • Develop and maintain Diaconate Formation literature and handouts
  • Develop and implement publicity for targeted recruitment

Application and Inquiry process:

  • Provide team leadership and staffing (selection of facilitators, leaders or hosts) for the Diaconal Inquiry Phase
  • Coordinate session planning and execution for the Diaconal Inquiry Phase
  • Manage and coordinate aspirant selection process
  • Facilitate consensus among staff for the constitution of new Aspirancy classes
  • Provide notification as required to applicants, pastors, and others related to diaconate applications
  • Develop related forms and documents

Candidate selection process:

  • Oversight of File Management
  • Sets criteria for admission to Candidacy using the National Directory Standards of Readiness.
  • Constitutes Advisory Board and provides coordination, logistics and reporting

Program Evaluation:

  • Develop survey methods (preferably on-line – e.g. Survey Monkey or similar)
  • Survey each class a minimum of once each year
  • Provide year-end evaluations and program-end evaluations
  • Survey retreats, facilitators, and presenters to generate continuous improvement
  • Document results for audit records and propose corrective actions

Distance learning:

  • Lead and coordinate blended learning as an element of diaconal formatio
  • Engage and implement ADLA Moodle resources
  • Research and select other online resources (video/podcasts/virtual presentations) for various topics
  • Plan, select and implement academic resources online


Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, typically:

  • Active member of a Roman Catholic faith community
  • B.A. degree (M.A. preferred) in a related field or ordination
  • Five years related experience at parish or diocesan levels 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: 

  • Archdiocesan principles and practices
  • Principles of supervision and training 

Skill in: 

  • Facilitating and teaching religious topics related to diaconate studies
  • Report preparation and presentation
  • Short- and long-range organizational planning
  • Utilizing software applications including word processing and database management
  • Communicate effectively in written and oral form (bilingual preferred)
  • Based on the staffing needs of the office at the time a position is being filled, the ability to effectively communicate

Ability to: 

  • Display sensitivity to various situations and needs
  • Encourage support for the Archdiocese and the Church
  • Analyze situations and use judgment and resourcefulness
  • Utilize computer and office equipment
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Travel to various locations
  • Adjust work schedule to work some evenings and weekends to fulfil assignments and assist with execution of events and projects

Physical conditions:

  • Occasionally lift up to 20 pounds
  • Sit for sustained periods of time on a daily basis
  • Perform tasks requiring intermittent bending, stooping, and walking
  • Sustain frequent movement of the fingers, wrists, hands, and arms
