Cardinal Mahony To Ordain William Lowe To Priesthood For Archdiocese Of Los Angeles May 6
Cardinal Roger Mahony will ordain to the priesthood William Lowe, the first married and former Episcopalian priest to be ordained to the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, May 6, at 3 p.m. at Blessed Junipero Serra Church, 5205 Upland Road, Camarillo.
Father Lowe, 68, served as an Episcopal priest for 27 years in Newton, Mass., before retiring and moving to Southern California with his wife of 44 years, Linda. Lowe and his wife were received into the Catholic Church while still living in Massachusetts. He was ordained to the diaconate in February 2007. His ordination is made possible by a pastoral provision issued by the late Pope John Paul II, allowing former Episcopalian priests to be ordained to the Catholic priesthood.
“We all welcome Father Lowe and his wife Linda to this unique offering of their gifts to build up the Body of Christ, His Church, said Cardinal Roger Mahony. “They both bring with them their own experience of the Christian tradition, and their love for the Catholic Church and its ministries.
Lowe’s reception into the Catholic Church did not require him to renounce or reject his earlier ministry, Cardinal Mahony noted. Instead, Lowe “brings with him and offers to the Church the particular gifts and talent for pastoral ministry he had partly developed in another part of the Christian family. This is not a precedent that implies any diminishing of the value of celibacy in priestly ministry, but an instance in which the Church acts in an exceptional way to strengthen and ennoble the gifts brought by its newest members.”
