CCHD 1996 Grant Recipients

NATIONAL GRANTS
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) -
$40,000
CHIRLA is the only broad-based, multi-ethnic umbrella immigrant advocacy organization in Los Angeles. Their Immigrant Workers Empowerment Project promotes the rights of domestic workers in attaining dignity and power in the workplace and helps day-laborers in their struggle for civil rights and to gather and find work.

Tourism Industry Development Council -
$35,000
This project focuses on building a "Living Wage Coalition" from approximately twenty (20) labor/community organizations. It proposes minimum wage standards for companies that contract with, or receive assistance from the City of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches -
$30,000
This project seeks to continue to build the infrastructure of the LA Metro Churches organization, while focusing on forcing Los Angeles County to institute a mandatory GED requirement for ex-offenders.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT GRANTS
Pueblo Nuevo Development -
$12,560
This nonprofit community development corporation is dedicated to revitalizing the Westlake District, one of the poorest areas of Los Angeles. The funds will be used to plan a job creation and business development strategy focusing on the home furniture industry.

Festival Catering -
$8,530
Festival Catering is conceived of as a worker-owned catering cooperative that began as a project of the Pasadena Restaurant Worker's Association. All members are first generation immigrants from Mexico and Central America, with most currently employed in the food service industry. Funds will be used to complete a feasibility study.

LOCAL GRANTS
Hope In Youth - $10,000 Hope In Youth is an ambitious gang prevention strategy based in various congregations around the Archdiocese.

Los Angeles Manufacturing Action Project -
$10,000
LAMAP seeks to transform the living and working conditions for 350,000 workers-largely immigrant workers-in non-durable manufacturing jobs in Los Angeles' Alameda Corridor. LAMAP is trying to build stronger ties between communities in that area and labor unions.

Korean Immigrant Worker Advocates -
$10,000
KIWA was founded to organize and train Korean immigrant workers, promote civic participation, and secure better working conditions for their constituents.

Sidewalk Vending Coalition of Los Angeles -
$10,000
SVCLA is the organization of sidewalk vendors seeking to establish vending districts in accord with the L.A. City ordinance approved in 1994.

Bus Riders Union -
$10,000
The Bus Riders Union is a project of the Labor/Community Strategy Center. Its purpose is to organize mass-transit users in order to secure environmentally sound and equitable public transportation in Los Angeles County.

Interfaith Community Organizing Project -
$5,000
ICOP is affiliated with the Pacific Institute of Community Organizations and is in the process of rebuilding its organizing effort in the Santa Barbara and Santa Maria areas. Their "School to Work" Project for youth is their key focus.

Concerned Citizens of South Central Los Angeles -
$5,000
Concerned Citizens will organize block clubs to facilitate the construction of 24 units of low-income affordable housing.
