CCHD 1997 Grant Recipients

NATIONAL GRANTS
Los Angeles Manufacturing Project -
$30,000 LA MAP seeks to serve as a catalyst for labor, community, religious and academic groups to begin the community building process that must proceed union organizing in the Alameda Corridor.

Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles -
$30,000 The grant will fund CHIRLA�s day laborer and domestic worker organizing projects.

Hope In Youth - Justice For Workers -
$30,000 HIY will support the creation of a minimum of 15 job co-ops creating 180-225 new jobs by mid-1998. It will also seek leverage to provide an employee benefits packages and job training programs.

Tourism Industry Development Council -
$35,000 TIDC is working to enforce the recently passed L.A. City Council living wage ordinance. This ordinance would requires businesses covered by the measure to pay a wage of $7.25 per hour with health benefits or $8.50 without benefits. TIDC is a policy arm of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union Local 11.

Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches -
$50,000 L.A. Metro is organizing small, independent African-Americans churches in South Central Los Angeles. Funds will be earmarked for leadership development and their initiative to mandate GED requirements for ex-offenders.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT GRANTS
Hope In Youth - Justice for Workers -
$15,000 The capacity building initiative will pay for two consultants to provide technical assistance in organizing job co-ops.

Festival Catering Cooperative -
$10,000 With CCHD funding, Festival Catering will complete a business plan for a cooperative restaurant run by immigrants who have been working in restaurants in the Pasadena area.

Esperanza Community Housing Corporation -
$40,000 ECHC empowers the Maple-Adams/Hoover-Adams neighborhoods of South Central Los Angeles to develop a multi-vendor market place offering fresh foods with a Latino market emphasis.

LOCAL GRANTS
LISTO -
$10,000 LISTO is an alternative job cooperative previously funded by CCHD. It is currently seeking independence from its sponsor, St. Joseph Center, as it builds capacity for self governance.

Gathered in Action Towards Economic Self Sufficiency (GATES) -
$10,000 GATES is a group of young immigrant Latinas seeking to build skills and secure economic self-sufficiency through the creation of a food buying cooperative.

Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) -
$10,000 Los Angeles ACORN seeks to build a community organizing project with chapters in Watts, Inglewood, and Echo Park.

West Valley Community Development Corporation -
$10,000 As the only community development corporation in their area, West Valley Community Development Corporation seeks to organize block clubs, neighborhood watch groups, and home buyer clubs for the low-income residents of Canoga Park.

Westside Organizing Committee -
$10,000 Seed money from CCHD will help WOC to give birth to an Industrial Areas Foundation community organization on the west side of Los Angeles.

Concerned Citizens of South Central Los Angeles -
$10,000 Concerned Citizens will organize block clubs to facilitate the clean-up of major water wells in their area that are contaminated by hard chromium and lead.
