Archdiocese of Los Angeles
Ministry

Office of Justice and Peace

The mission of the Office is to educate the people of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on the principles of Catholic social teaching and its application to contemporary local, national, and international issues; to advocate for public policy which affirms human life and human dignity and reflects a consistent life ethic; and to develop a constituency on social concerns. The Office--in conjunction with the Justice and Peace Commission--seeks to accomplish its mission through its various projects and programs including legislative advocacy, education, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, and Catholic Relief Services.

We look forward to hearing from you about how we can best assist you in your efforts to work for peace and justice!

Justice and Peace Commission

The Justice and Peace Commission is an advisory body to the Office of Justice and Peace and supports the Office in its work to advance its mission. Members of the Commission are volunteers who represent various constituencies of the Archdiocese and who assist the Office to plan, organize, and implement projects and programs.

Each year, the Commission sponsors the Public Policy Breakfast with Cardinal Roger Mahony. The purpose of the Public Policy Breakfast is to convene legislators, parish leaders, and representatives from community organizations and to focus attention on specific social policy issues. Topics at previous events have been health care reform, welfare reform, the anti-affirmative action initiative known as Proposition 209, Third World Debt and the Millennium, and The Los Angeles Region in the New Millennium.

4.  Just Faith Returns in Santa Monica ~~ Beginning the week of August 25, 2010

****************************

JustFaith, used in over 1,000 parishes and churches involving 20,000 people, is a 30-week process that empowers participants to develop a passion and thirst for justice, and prepares them for the work of social ministry.

JustFaith focuses on discipleship—engagement in the life of Jesus—and the call to be about God’s dream of justice and compassion in a world scarred by the domestic and global crisis called poverty. Meeting weekly, small groups of 10–15 people employ books, videos, discussion, prayer, retreats and hands-on experiences. The intent is to provide a tapestry of learning opportunities that emphasize and enliven the healing work of God’s compassion found in scripture, church history and teaching, and faithful witnesses.

St. Monica Catholic Community is hosting a Just Faith course for this upcoming year.

When:  Beginning the week of August 25, 2010 at 7pm and continuing on Wednesday nights till the end of May, 2011.

5  Christian Brothers Investment Services Hotels and Human Trafficking Initiative

****************************

In April, 2010, 300 clients of Christian Brothers Investment Services, faith-based organizations, and socially responsible investors, including members of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR), sent a letter to eight major hotels with chains in South Africa to learn about actions being taken to combat human trafficking and child sexual exploitation in advance of The World Cup. While not responsible for these crimes, hotels can help to stop the use of their facilities for these purposes. We asked the hotels if they were training staff to be observant to signs of human trafficking, working with local authorities to protect victims, encouraging employees to report incidents to hotel management, and publicly reporting to stakeholders on progress.

Thanks to your support, we now have information from all the hotels we contacted. To read CBIS’ full report, go to http://www.cbisonline.com/page.asp?id=1047 for a review of hotel responses, policies and programs to address child sexual exploitation. The report’s major findings include:

Remember, when you stay at a hotel, be sure to give a letter to the front desk to share your concerns about human trafficking. To download the letter, visit http://www.cbisonline.com/page.asp?id=1017.  Please let us know if you have used the letter and if you have taken other steps to encourage hotels to combat human trafficking.

Be sure to check CBIS’ SRI Action Center at www.cbisonline.com in the coming months for more ways to become involved and share your concerns. Thank you for your interest in and assistance with improving the social and environmental performance of corporations.
