Lesson Plan Religion 12: Christian Justice Cultural Project

Submitted by: Wendy Grosmehr, Notre Dame Academy

During the month of January we will be discussing prejudice and stereotypes. Prejudice and stereotypes because people dont understand each other. In order to facilitate a deeper understanding of other cultures at school you will be required to give a presentation on your cultures to class. Over Christmas break you will need to begin research on your culture by talking with parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends (in your culture). Cultural traditions and values are passed on through the generations so dont rely on one person for your information. Cultural magazines are also helpful especially at this time of year since they write about different holiday traditions. Begin to collect music, clothes, pictures, etc. that will help to identify your culture. These will also be required part of your presentation.

Please research the Traditions, Customs & Values of the following areas:

  • Family
  • Dating
  • Marriage(the ceremony & in general)
  • Communication
  • Religion/God
  • Special holidays & events (i.e. birth of a child, baptism, adulthood/coming of age, etc.)

Answer these questions:

  1. What beliefs/values are important in your culture?
  2. What is considered honorable?
  3. What is looked down upon?
  4. What are some symbols or signs of your culture? What do they mean?(draw or find pictures)

Please come back to class after break with the four questions answered and a paragraph on each of the different areas.
