Our Programs

Are you interested in participating in any of the following programs of the Office? Give us one hour each month and we'll help you make a difference on behalf of the poor.

Legislative Advocacy

The Office of Justice and Peace assists parishioners and other members of the Archdiocesan community to respond effectively to issues which threaten human dignity and affect the poor and vulnerable. The staff of the Office is available to provide workshops on specific social issues in the light of Catholic social teaching, training to organize nonpartisan voter registration and voter mobilization drives, and assistance in developing parish-based legislative networks and parish social action committees.

Educating Communities

Education is an essential element in helping people make the connection between the principles and values at the core of our faith and tradition and the application of those principles and values to specific public policy issues.

Our staff is available to give workshops, seminars, days of reflection on themes and topics related to Catholic social teaching, spirituality and justice, and social issues. You can also call the Office for assistance in developing educational programs.

Making Social Justice Work

Social Justice has been identified as Pastoral Initiative VI and we want to ensure that we are able to support the implementation of this initiative as fully as possible. One of the pastoral strategies identified is that each parish is to ?provide a social justice ministry to raise the consciousness of parishioners by educating and informing them on various issues of social justice.? (Pastoral Initiative VI). It is the primary responsibility of our office, in close collaboration with other offices within the archdiocese, to call, prepare, invite, coordinate and engage the Catholic community in loving service and effective action that leads to improved lives for those most in need. In response to this, our office offered a number of Listening Sessions/Focus Groups a needs assessment to identify what resources are needed to implement this strategy.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development

The message at the heart of Catholic social teaching has always been justice and hope for the poor. In 1969, the U.S. Catholic bishops created the Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), to fund domestic anti-poverty projects organized by low-income communities and organizations. CCHD has become the largest national funding program for self-help projects aimed at social change.

Since its inception, CCHD has provided technical assistance and allocated over $5 million in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to organizations controlled by poor and low-income people seeking institutional change in the social, political, and economic arenas.
