Rite of Election March 5th, 2017
Rite of calling March 12, 2017

The rite of Christian Initiation presented …is designed for adults [and children of catechetical age] who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, conscious and freely seek, the living God and enter the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts.  By God’s help they will be strengthened spiritually during their preparation and at the proper time will receive the sacraments fruitfully. RCIA 1

“The initiation of catechumens is a gradual process that takes place within the community of the faithful.”  RCIA 4  “This journey includes not only the periods for making inquiry and for maturing…but also the steps marking the catechumens’ progress, as they pass” from one stage to the next in the process of becoming a Christian. RCIA 6

The Rite of Election, the second step in the process is celebrated at the beginning of Lent and marks the beginning of the final period of preparation, the time of purification and enlightenment.  This is a more intense spiritual preparation in anticipation of the celebration of the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil.

The final phase of the process is called by its Greek name, Mystagogy.  This phase is marked by a time of reflection on the experience of having celebrated full Initiation.  The post baptismal phase of catechesis calls one to reflect more deeply on one’s participation in the paschal mystery.

The Rite of Reception into Full Communion is the ritual by which those baptized in another Christian tradition come into the Catholic Church.  The rite id so arranged that no greater burden than necessary is required for the establishment of communion and unity. RCIA 473  In cases where there are no catechumens it might be pastorally advisable to celebrate the rite of calling to continuing conversion for persons baptized but previously un-catechized. RCIA 446

These diocesan celebrations are publicized in a timely fashion usually immediately after the Christmas break.
