Law in the Service of the Church

The revelation given by God through Jesus Christ is proclaimed and witnessed by the Church he established.  Theology reflects on and explains divine revelation.  Church law (called “Canon Law” because it is expressed in the form of individual norms or “canons”) is a means of applying in the practical day-to-day life of Catholics the vision or mission entrusted to us by the Lord. Its ultimate purpose is one with that mission: the salvation of souls.

Canon law is intended to protect the values and essential truths of our faith through norms designed to preserve and promote community. As such it binds all baptized Roman Catholics.  Canon law addresses issues related to church governance, administration of the sacraments, relationships among communities of the faithful, financial management of church assets, various offenses and penalties, and procedures for the exercise of one's rights under church law.  Communicating, explaining and applying the law of the Church give rise to our “ministry of justice.”

In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, this ministry, entrusted to the Archbishop in his role as chief Shepherd and Judge of the people entrusted to his care, is delegated to the Office of Canonical Services and to the Metropolitan Tribunal.  These offices are staffed by priests, deacons, religious and lay persons trained in Canon Law, together with their support staff.

The Office of Canonical Services, directed by the Vicar for Canonical Services, has among its functions the processing of dispensations and permissions for marriage.  Its staff also advises the Cardinal, pastors and other archdiocesan officials on matters related to Church law.

The Tribunal, under the direction of the Judicial Vicar, conducts trials and studies related to the validity of marriage, as well as other judicial proceedings that may arise under Church law.
