Training in Spiritual Direction: Introduction | Phase I | Phase II | Phase III

Spiritual Direction

What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction is a contemplative process, carried out in the context of a helping relationship, in which one faith-filled person assists another to pay attention to God's action in the person's life and his/her response to this action.

What is included in the Center's training of a Spiritual direction?

The Spirituality Center offers a three year non-residential training program in Retreat/Spiritual Direction and provides on-going workshops in spirituality. These programs provide participants the opportunity to explore the concept of Spiritual Direction and to prepare for this special ministry. The initial two year schedule include one all-day Saturday and one 4:00-7:00pm weekday each month, beginning in September and concluding in May. The third year is divided into three segments, with emphasis given to the practice and supervision of skills. Faculty members and supervisors are drawn from experienced directors in the local area. All sessions are held on the Doheny Campus of Mount St. Mary's College.

Applicants are chosen to reflect a diversity of age and background and a balance between women and men, lay and religious. The first review of application takes place in mid-May, a second review occurs in early July, and any final applications are considered in August.
