Spiritual Direction Phase III
What is it?
It is a three-segment supervised year in which intern directors (those who have participated in Phase I and II or equivalent years) demonstrate their ability to apply the skills of spiritual direction and retreat direction.
Who may attend?
Those who have successfully completed Phase I and II or an equivalent program.
What are the requirements?
Having completed the requirements for Phase I and II, participants are required to be interviewed by the director and associate director; be able to attend all of the Phase III sessions; be open to the supervision process; have submitted a spiritual autobiography.
What is the focus of each segment?
Segment I
This first segment includes a Saturday orientation session, five evening sessions, and a final evaluation session with each intern. Various aspects of the nature and practice of spiritual direction will be presented at each session. During the practice sessions that follow, six intern directors, meeting with two experienced supervisors, will focus on their ability to demonstrate the necessary skills for spiritual direction, and the reflective skills needed in supervision. A five-page integration paper is required at the end of this segment.

Segment II
In this segment, the entire focus is the preparation for retreat direction. Intern directors will learn how to apply the skills they have acquired to the retreat setting. The focus of this segment will be beginning, middle and ending sessions of the retreat.

Segment III
In this segment, each intern director will direct one retreatant. Following time for prayer and the meeting with the retreatant, intern directors will meet in small groups with a supervisor to reflect upon each director's own experience of the retreat.
